Florida vs Kentucky: Tonight, February 7, at 7 p.m., on ESPN. Be there or, I dunno, tweet square.
It's not fair to Davis to call him anything but the best player who will see the floor for either team on Tuesday night. At 6'10" and 220, he's built more like a mantis than a manchild, but he's got superb instincts on the defensive end and doesn't try to do too much on the offense, sticking with a repertoire of deep low post moves and dunks that has made him the nation's most efficient offensive player. He doesn't turn the ball over, passes acceptably, and hits almost 70 percent of his free throws, too, meaning his only glaring weakness is his inability to look at himself in mirrors. Good luck with that, Patric.
Kenny Boynton's cooled off considerably from the white-hot shooting that marked the first 15 or so games of his year, when he was making nearly half of his threes, but is still shooting a fantastic 43.8 percent on his threes, and plays admirable defense on all manner of wing players despite giving up a few inches to virtually every one of his assignments. Boynton also drives better than any other Florida player and typically avoids turnovers. If he has a big game, the Gators could well pull the upset on the Wildcats.

MKG, as he's known, is quick and long, and will be a match-up problem for every Florida player except Will Yeguete, who is exceedingly unlikely to draw him as an assignment. He slashes mercilessly and is lethal in transition, but could have a better jumper and improve his shot selection. At 6'7" and 232 pounds, it might not matter against the undersized Gators.
Beal isn't the second coming of Ray Allen that some thought he would be: of Florida's seven players with 10 or more threes, Beal is last in three-point field goal percentage. But Beal's made up for that by being more like Dwyane Wade: he's rebounding exceptionally well for his size, improving on defense on a week-by-week basis, and developing a driving game to match Boynton's. He's also the only perimeter-based Gator in the same realm as Kidd-Gilchrist, Marquis Teague, and Terrence Jones, athletically, and that may end up mattering.
No one's match-up tonight is tougher than Young's: he gives up size and length to Davis, and is still struggling with an ankle injury that is likely to limit his explosiveness down low. But Young, prior to his injury, was showing signs of a polished, consistent post game, and he can be deadly as a transition defender and dunker; he's also the emotional fulcrum of Florida's team, likely the best bellwether for whether the Gators are really feeling it at any given moment. If I were to sketch out the blueprint for victory tonight, Young having a big game would be the first item with a bullet.

I’m calling it now. If it’s close, the Gators are going to win. If it’s a blow-out, Kentucky wins. I’m leaning towards thinking the Gators are going to get slaughtered.

Yeah it could be ugly. There’s a reason Kentucky has won 40 whatever games in a row at Rupp. But the Gators do have a lot of players with a lot of experience. That should help them in the road environment (even though they have sucked on the road against good teams this year). Speaking of which, hopefully they can draw on the experience of all those road losses earlier in the season to try to grind this one out. We’re going to find out a lot about this Gators team tonight though, particularly their mental toughness and ability to execute down the stretch in a hostile environment against a more physically gifted and talented team. This should give us good insight into their chances at a deep run in March.

Yeah, those are all good points. I just think we’re hyping this as a big game, which it is, but at the same time, we need to be careful. We’re going into the game as nine-point underdogs on the road to a place were the home team has won 48 straight games.
Hoping for the best, expecting the worst … is how I’m looking at it.

Yeah that’s the way I view it as well.

I see this turning into the Anthony Davis-Brad Beal show
Beal’s the only Gator athletic enough to challenge Kentucky and create on his own. If he’s going to have that “OH MY GOD” moment this year, it’s probably going to be tonight (Kentucky was the only local-ish team to snub Beal. He had offers and serious recruiting from Ohio State, Illinois, Kansas and Missouri and not Kentucky).
As for Davis, he’s a good argument for reinstating the high school draft rule. He’s too NBA ready to be messing around in college.

Personally, I think they should make it two-years in college (or past your HS graduation) before you can enter the NBA. Either that or just scrap the idea entirely.
The one-and-done thing, hurts the college game a lot.

Having Davis/Durant/Rose in college for a year
helps the game’s marketability. It arguably hurts the teams’ chemistry, but Calipari has been the most fervent recruiter of one and done talent, and his teams have all been great. I think it’s one of those things that actually isn’t a bad thing even though people feel like it should be a bad thing.

I agree it should be 2 years. Or, all professional sports could make a new rule that you have to have at minimum an Associates Degree because after all they call themselves “professionals”. Us real world professionals can’t get even a decent job without minimum, an Associates Degree. Of course, if the NBA passed a rule requiring a Degree, there would be so many open positions that everyone at AA would be starting in the NBA.
Yeah, so, the Derek Rose thing still pisses me off.

Andy,
Under the picture of Beal it says Florida vs Tennessee instead of Florida vs Kentucky and when you click the link it goes to the score of the Florida-UT Football game.
Gators1 - February 7, 2012
That’s weird. I fixed it, but then it went back to automatically saying Florida vs Tennessee. That makes me believe the problem wasn’t on Andy’s end.

Haha. He is due for a stop by here shortly.

Alabama played Kentucky well at Rupp...
and that was the 2nd of a Thursday-Saturday schedule. They’re much better defensively than UF is but much worse offensively. So a win can be accomplished but it takes an exceptional game, especially with a hobbled Young.

wish I could game thread it here, but I need to get the kiddies to bed first – maybe 2nd half if I can catch up on the DVR
