In somewhat of a shocking decision, elite 2012 defensive end Jordan Jenkins committed to Georgia earlier tonight on Fox Sports South’s "The New College Football Show: Next Class 2012." Jenkins chose Georgia over Florida, Alabama and Auburn.
The 6'3", 245-pounder was recruited by Will Muschamp to play the Buck position, and would have competed for serious playing time right away. The possibility of early playing time and his interest in pursuing engineering in college had many believing the Gators would win out in the end.
Ultimately, the Harris County product elected to stay in state, an impressive recruiting victory for Georgia over runner-up Alabama, and, more specifically, Todd Grantham over Kirby Smart.
Florida will now set its sights on Dante Fowler, Darius Hamilton, Leonard Williams, Jamal Marcus and Alex McCalister to fill the holes at defensive end.

I don’t think UGA even has an engineering program. They were talking about starting one a couple years ago, so at the very least, it is a brand new program. If he wanted to stay in state and study engineering, there’s an obvious choice for that…..

But I mean, who wants to go to GaTech?
FlaGators - January 9, 2012
someone interested in engineering?
or someone who wants to catch game winning TDs in overtime from Tebow!!!
skigator93 - January 9, 2012
GaTech is like UCF and USF. Nobody really wants to go there and play sports, it’s just they weren’t offered by UGA (or as UCF and USF – no Florida, Florida State or Miami offer).
But good call on the Tebow connection.
FlaGators - January 9, 2012
You don’t think UGA recruited Calvin Johnson?
skigator93 - January 9, 2012
and GA Tech has won a national title, so they aren’t exactly UCF/USF either
skigator93 - January 9, 2012
Oh I know. Just picking on somebody else this year.
FlaGators - January 9, 2012
FYI, UGA has an engineering program. I thought about applying to their engineering grad program after college.
GatorJustin - January 9, 2012 via mobile
Oops, never realized they only had a program for my discipline of engineering (agricultural and biological engineering). From what I read, they started their full program last year.
GatorJustin - January 9, 2012 via mobile
That’s interesting. New program and all. Still building their rep.
FlaGators - January 9, 2012
I still don't think they have an engineering program yet
The last I remember reading about it was President Adams’ desire to add a program a little over a year ago
I couldn’t find any announcement of a decision and the UGA website does not list engineering amongst its programs of study.
skigator93 - January 10, 2012
I would think, that it would be listed on their website if they had it. Might just have to ask the folks at DawgSports.

The AJC reported in November 2010 that Georgia and Georgia Southern were adding engineering programs. No timetable though.
GatorJustin - January 10, 2012 via mobile
Ahhh. So I wonder if Jenkins will do the program then … if it is ready.
FlaGators - January 10, 2012
Oh well
Can’t get’em all.
Gatorbuc15 - January 9, 2012
just gotta get some
sportsman - January 9, 2012
We have the #4 class right now. #3 according to Rivals I believe. So I think we’re fine right now. And I fully expect that we’ll pick up some more recruits from now until signing day.
Gatorbuc15 - January 10, 2012
I’d be surprised, but not blown away, if UF pulled away Fowler. Since the UA all american game he’s been pretty vocal about how he tries to recruit other players for FSU. Recruiting can always surprise you, though.
Also I thought UF’s engineering program would make them the favorite for Jenkins, and am pretty surprised it was UGA that beat UF, rather than ’Bama.
najabaas - January 9, 2012
I think Fowler is just playing Florida
I expect him to be a nole on NSD. Losing Jenkins hurts, but this is still a very solid class being put together. Hopefully Jenkins to UGA persuades Josh Harvey Clemmons that Florida is the place for him. I too am surprised that UGA pulled Jenkins. It was Bama and Florida all along, and somehow UGA and Grantham somehow swooped in and stole him in the last hour. Oh well, that’s recruiting for ya. Been a tough day for Florida recruiting, but all is not lost….we’re still Florida.
Cardsfan25 - January 9, 2012
We’ll be fine. Like you said, we’re Florida. Top 5 at least.
FlaGators - January 9, 2012
This is the first year that I have been able to follow the recruiting process
And I gotta tell ya, It’s stressin me out!
DustinFLA - January 9, 2012 via mobile
I could never do it as a full-time job. I have some serious respect for those who do.
FlaGators - January 9, 2012
I totally agree
DustinFLA - January 10, 2012 via mobile
Ugh. And Alabama won on top of this. That was pretty cool that Upshaw passed the award over to the other guys on the Defense tho.
Gators1 - January 9, 2012
Engineering and UGA?
Seriously? We have one of the top programs in the country last I checked.
htrcooler - January 10, 2012 via mobile
Falcons need to hurry up and hire Grantham so we can have Jenkins back. Poor guy… UGA? Really? I grew up in ATL and didn’t know a UGA fan until my friends found out the HOPE would give them money to go there. Their academics aren’t good either.
Andrew Nordine - January 10, 2012
lol whut?
Mark Mandingo - January 10, 2012 via mobile
You lived in Atlanta and didn’t know a UGA fan? Did you live under a rock somewhere?
Also, UGA is extremely strong academically and due to the Hope Scholarship, getting into UGA has become amazingly difficult. It is probably pretty close to the admissions standards at UF. UGA might even be the third strongest school in the SEC behind Vandy and UF.
Oh, and in the latest US News rankings, UF’s engineering ranked a very respectible 32nd best in the nation (tied with CU, UC-Davis and Penn-Philly.
skigator93 - January 10, 2012
Isn’t it near the top 10 for public schools? Hard to judge verse the private schools. When I was there I think it was the 11th best public engineering and civil was top 5.
GatorJustin - January 10, 2012 via mobile
Oh, and every time ive been to Atlanta Ive met more UGA fans than Tech. Hopefully he was being sarcastic or that’s ridiculous.
GatorJustin - January 10, 2012 via mobile
I checked in at Rivals today
and we are still in the running for virtually every good recruit left on the table.
Hopefully we’ll get our chare of those and this will end up a stellar class.
skigator93 - January 10, 2012
That’ll work.
