Florida Football Recruiting: Darius Hamilton Commits To Rutgers Over Florida

Although Florida was perceived to be a contender for five-star defensive end Darius Hamilton -- especially after former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano left to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers -- the Gators failed to make the elite pass rusher’s final two.

Hamilton announced his decision earlier tonight and chose to stay close to home and play for Rutgers over what was his new second choice, the Miami Hurricanes.

Florida had long been considered Hamilton’s second option, while Rutgers had always been the team to beat. And when Schiano left Rutgers with less than a week to go until Signing Day, many believed Hamilton would fall right into the Gators’ arms.

Well, a late visit to Miami gave Hamilton a lot to think about, and the Hurricanes overtook the Gators for the No. 2 spot. Hamilton eventually eliminated Florida altogether.

However, second place means nothing in recruiting. Second place may as well be last place. And Rutgers, despite the late coaching drama, managed to hold on to its top target.

So what’s next for the Gators at defensive end? Well, Dante Fowler is still up for grabs, despite him saying otherwise. He still plans to do the hat-pick routine, choosing between Florida and Florida State. Another prospect to watch is Leonard Williams. He’s reportedly down to Florida and Southern California, and while all signs point toward USC, he would be a great pickup if he were to choose Florida.

The Gators already have commitments from four defensive ends: Jonathan Bullard, Bryan Cox Jr., Alex McCalister, and Quinteze Williams. But for depth purposes adding a fifth -- and another instant impact player to go along with Bullard -- would be ideal. However, it won’t make or break the class.

I don’t think he wanted the competition at de, with who we have already and who we might get, I don’t think this is a huge lose for us, would of liked it for the depth but oh well.

Yeah. I don’t think anyone was ever a serious option outside of Rutgers. He wanted to be close to home. I think Florida and the late addition of Miami was just a flirtation thing, and nothing more obviously.

Probably

better for him to stay home anyways. No competition. Instant starter. 3 years to develop for NFL. Actually surprised more defensive players don’t go to instant-starting colleges.

Agreed. Exactly.

well...

I think they also like to play in big games on national television. While UF plays prime time games against teams like Alabama and LSU on CBS, Rutgers will be facing UConn at 11am on ESPN2. They also face the criticism of “well, he looked good, but didn’t necessarily face the toughest competition.”

Yeah. That’s true as well.

I heard the biggest reason he eliminated Florida is he wants to play DT in college.

Unfortunately at only 245 pounds that isn’t realistic at a school that plays against Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, and Georgia, and has to deal with those offensive lines and running backs and power running games. At Miami in the ACC they could probably get away with that and at Rutgers they definitely can.

Haha, I know right. You and I were just discussing that exact same thing earlier today. Not a chance in the SEC.

I wasn’t expecting him to commit to UF. Not that big of a loss IMO.

My thoughts exactly.

I find this disturbing

shouldn’t the Gators be getting their man…. no matter who it is? I know this is the SEC and there is competition, but if we’re gonna rebuild the time is now… or maybe it was a few years back…

We can’t get them all. Not even Texas can get every Texas kid. This is a Jersey boy and he wanted to be close to home. His heart wanted him there so that’s fine. Atleast he didn’t pick us only to go back to Rutgers later. We are still going to have an awesome class. I wouldn’t let this worry you to much.

And about the rebuild thing….IMO this is the rebuild class. This is Muschamp’s first full class and what this class does will have a huge factor in where Muschamp is in the next couple of years.
