Florida knocked off 16th-ranked Mississippi State 69-57, improving its home winning streak to 17 games.
It was a balanced scoring attack for the Gators. Brad Beal led all scorers with 19 points, Erik Murphy chipped in 14 points, Erving Walker finished with 10 points and four assists, and Patric Young put up 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.
The most impressive thing about this win was the Gators having to adapt to a style of play they’re not entirely comfortable with. Mississippi State was running its half-court offense and using a lot of clock, then feeding Arnett Moultrie and Renardo Sidney late in the shot clock. That allowed the Bulldogs to hang around and keep Florida out of its transition offense.
It was a close game until the second half when Florida really tightened up on defense. Will Yeguete, Young and even Mike Rosario all drew charges, getting the team fired up and the crowd into it. (By the way, it was probably the best crowd so far this season.)
Moultrie was far less effective guarding Young in the second half. Young struggled on offense early, as Moultrie made things difficult inside. No worries, though. Young’s patience paid off, and in the second half he exploded for dunk after dunk. You know, the I-hope-there-weren’t-any-kids-in-the-front-row-because-that-dunk-was-violent type of dunks.
Moutrie fouled out with 2:04 left in the game, and at that point the Bulldogs had no chance at making a comeback.
The Gators didn’t get the offensive production from Walker and Kenny Boynton that they’re used to seeing, but the two guards combined for nine assists and only one turnover. Mississippi State out-rebounded Florida 30-25, but with Florida playing near mistake-free basketball with only five turnovers, it really didn’t matter.

Until late for us

I was actually starting to think that we wouldn’t get to the line at all. Miss St did a great job (for the most part) of not fouling us.

You're welcome Gator Nation
Rowdy Reptiles went hard. I appreciate all the positive comments I’ve received and trust me, the students appreciate all your love.

Yeah, it was good stuff. Well, at least from the TV anyway.

Loudest game all season
6th man
evandagator - January 28, 2012
Wait, does Texas A&M have that trademarked as well? Or can we say that without getting sued…
FlaGators - January 28, 2012
Yep
T-shirts and all.
Gatorbuc15 - January 29, 2012
We will just have TheBullGator pick up the bill I guess.
FlaGators - January 29, 2012
Good idea
I’m sure he’s good for it.
Gatorbuc15 - January 29, 2012
He is a little tied up with his buyout here of course…
I guess we’ll allow him yet another delay in this case. Sigh.

Hey now!
No adding on to what I already owe!

Ha, yeah … that’s a little unfair. We’ll just have Andy pay for our legal bills.
FlaGators - January 29, 2012
How about you Fla?
You seem to me like a pretty wealthy individual.
Gatorbuc15 - January 29, 2012
Interesting.
FlaGators - January 29, 2012
‘Interesting’ in as you’ll do it?
Gatorbuc15 - January 29, 2012
What’s earned in interest (say, a year) on roughly $5 billion dollars?
FlaGators - January 29, 2012
I honestly don’t know.
Are you luring me into a trap Fla?
Gatorbuc15 - January 29, 2012
I’m just saying that’s what A&M has to spend, roughly, per year, if they are like any other business.
Spend the interest on you endowment.
FlaGators - January 29, 2012
Gotcha
Gatorbuc15 - January 29, 2012
Say it is 2.5% a year, yeah, I can’t match that.
I’m also horrible at math and used an online interest calculator to find that that would be $125 million.
Though I could be wrong on that. Probably, but that sounds right, I guess.
Yeah… We could get Andy to chip in as well. He’s got the power of SB Nation (Vox Media) behind him.
