Florida Football Recruiting: QB Skyler Mornhinweg Brings Gators' 2012 Class To 21 Commits

One of Brent Pease's duties as Florida's new offensive coordinator was to recruit quarterbacks. With Skyler Mornhinweg, who committed to the Gators on Friday, according to ESPN's GatorNation's Derek Tyson, Pease has gotten his man.

Mornhinweg is a three-star prospect according to Rivals, but a four-star quarterback in ESPNU's eyes. He's got good size, at 6'3" and somewhere between 190 (ESPN) and 215 (Rivals) pounds, and he's got a decent football mind — at least, that's what I'd hope, given that Mornhinweg is the son of Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, who only helped resurrect Michael Vick as an occasionally lethal passer.

Hit the jump for highlights of Mornhinweg's junior season and a bit more analysis.

Star-divide

Mornhinweg — who was previously committed to Penn State, but whose recruitment by the outgoing Jay Paterno created an opening for other schools — gives the Gators four scholarship quarterbacks, joining Jacoby Brissett, Jeff Driskel, and Tyler Murphy at a position that has more talent than production or experience. He'll add depth, which became critical in 2011 as Florida's outmanned offensive line helped force the Gators to start then-third-stringer Brissett, but he's also insurance against the loser of the Brissett-Driskel quarterback derby transferring.

Mornhinweg's commitment should also end Florida's pursuit of quarterbacks for the 2012 recruiting cycle. The Gators had reportedly been in contact with Jacob Guy and Paxton Lynch, but will probably choose to take players at positions of need instead of a second quarterback in 2012, and focus on Brice Ramsey or other quarterbacks for 2013.

It will also now become Pease's job to mold his charges. He did good work in not screwing up Kellen Moore's senior season at Boise State, but he'll be taking on a slightly different challenge as the steward of a stew of raw ingredients in Gainesville.

While I like Mornhinweg over Lynch and Guy (yes, combined), I still think the loser of the Driskel – Brissett battle for starting quarterback transfers. Why? Because I would.

Yeahhhh hence why we have brought in a QB this year…

And I’m glad it’s Mornhinweg and not one of the other two. Especially this late in the game.

I honestly don't even understand why Brissett went there.

Obviously it worked out for him in his first season getting a lot of playing time. But looking at it a year ago, you’ve got Driskel, the number one QB in the nation, and then you decide to go there? I thought he’d be a backup his entire career.

He was Weis’ guy. And we all know how that worked out for Jacoby…

Some guys aren't scared of competition

I sent my evaluation to Andy. Should be up soon

At first, my reaction was “another 3 star guy?! – we’re going to run out of schollys before the big boys announce!” But then I realized that Alabama offered him, so anytime we get any kid that Saban is interested in, I consider it a positive. Plus, we certainly don’t have a clear cut QB talent on the current roster, so I’m fine with this reported commitment.

But we still better get a couple of the big fish left in the pond.

He’s a 4 star according to espn which I think is the best at evaluating the kids, my opinion at least. He looks good by his film very accurate and good quick release. Hopefully he can get developed in case driskell or brissett dont hack it like they should. I think this kid is a backup plan more than anything, driskell is a stud and should be fine, he’s got all the tools just needs a little polish.

at least a lot of polish. And better blocking and a couple guys who can catch the ball.

is that all?

maybe a decent game plan or two?

Maybe, but he will most likely redshirt this year

That would have him 2 years behind Driskell and Brissett.

That’s not really a back up plan

For QBs

That’s about as good a backup plan as you can hope for.

That's not a backup plan to me

That’s the next guy in line

Yep, you guys are right.

Mostly a depth move because chances are one of Brissett, Driskel and Murphy will end up transferring.

And who knows? Maybe Mornhinweg develops into a really good QB. Definitely worth the take.

Now we wait till NSD. I don’t think Florida has any targets left that are committing before then.

I disagree

I think our coaches think he will be a good QB and that’s why they recruited him.

As I said above he will be two years behind Driskell and Brissett most likely

Why havent any of the sites reported this yet. They still have him as penn state verbal, is this a sure thing or just reports.

He hasn't publicly announced yet.

I think he’s going to do that sometime soon.

Wasn't he committed to Stanford at one time?

I knew he was a Peen State commit, but I thought he also pledged Stanford.

Don’t know about that.

This dudes got some major talent on both sides of the ball. Love this pick up. The only thong that kinda scares me is that video didn’t show any zip throws. And the one out route it showed him doing had a little loft to it which as we all found out this year does not turn out very good. Maybe I’m just still haunted by the war chant echoing through the Swamp idk.
