Florida Vs. Ohio State Rapid Recap: Gators Get First Bowl Win Under Will Muschamp, 24-17

Florida defeated Ohio State, 24-17, in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl. We'll look back at the game in at multiple parts: The Rapid Recap, which reacts to the game in full before a second viewing, comes first.

Florida has a bowl win under Will Muschamp. Florida has a winning season under Will Muschamp. Florida has an undefeated record against Ohio State. (And I ended up in a debate on Twitter.) It's nice to be able to count on some things.

Star-divide

How Florida Won

Florida never trailed, but took a 21-10 lead on a blocked punt early in the second half that helped put the game fully out of reach. It was the second moment of special teams brilliance on the day, after Andre Debose's 99-yard kickoff return, the longest play in Gator Bowl history.

Outstanding

Remember when special teams coach D.J. Durkin was the object of ire for every Florida fan? The Gators finished the year with six blocked kicks and three touchdowns on kick and punt returns, and Chris Rainey now owns the school and SEC records for blocks. Florida's special teams produced 14 points today, as many as Ohio State's offense, and that's reminiscent of the great Florida teams of the last few years.

Rainey didn't have his greatest game on the ground, with 71 yards, or his best game as a receiver, despite leading the team with three catches and accumulating 31 receiving yards. But put those things together with the block, and the dancing that drives defenders nuts, and the load he has been expected to carry (he had 16 carries; all other Florida runners combined had 22), and Rainey was probably one of Florida's five best players today.

Also on that list: Debose. No one on the current roster matches the game-breaking potential he has, and he's a weapon on special teams to rival Brandon James. He deserves the Gator Bowl MVP award he got, and he deserves to be a focal point of Florida's 2012 offense. Here's hoping he will be.

Florida's defensive line had six sacks, a season high, and got them with the help of a secondary that essentially didn't melt down at all; yes, there was a long pass in the fourth quarter, but it was while Florida was playing a modified prevent defense. That's the sort of defense Muschamp and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn want, and they will have almost everyone (including Dominique Easley and Marcus Roberson, not part of this game) back in 2012. That portends good things.

Speaking of good things on defense: Florida forced two fumbles! That makes me very happy!

Encouraging

John Brantley's never going to be confused for an excellent quarterback, or an NFL quarterback, no matter what Muschamp says, but he was better in this game than most in his senior year and made one of the best throws of his career on a dart to Rainey. Sure, he threw an interception, but it was a tipped pass; sure, he "fumbled" twice, but the first came on a weird, weird incomplete pass on the field that got turned into a fumble after the fact, and the other one was a snap exchange problem. I feel charitable today, and Brantley's day other than those miscues was really good, especially because he discovered an ability to escape in the pocket early on. So he's here. I'm not particularly sad to see him go, but I'm happy he left with the glow of victory on him.

Florida's offensive line didn't let Brantley get sacked, and even though it was probably as responsible as Brantley for the two fumbles, that still counts as a good day. With Matt Patchan out and Xavier Nixon and Chaz Green both banged up, it gets bumped up a notch to very good. This isn't a dominant unit now, and I'm not convinced that it can be one. But, for once, its delta was trending up.

The offense as a whole was generally a few steps removed from the worst of the worst this season, and a lot of people on Twitter, when asked to grade Brian White's performance as offensive coordinator, gave him something around a B. I thought White was probably the front-runner to be Florida's permanent offensive coordinator coming into the game, and I doubt that he hurt his stock.

Mike Gillislee saw the field and carried the ball. Whoa.

Needs Improvement

I don't know what really caused the snafu at the end of the first half that ended with Florida taking a delay of game penalty and kneeling instead of throwing a Hail Mary, but I would like for it to be cleaned up before 2012.

I tweeted that Florida's wide receivers were having their best game of the season early on, and I meant it, and yet they still combined for five catches for 50 yards. Sigh.

Embarrassing

Here's what I'm embarrassed about, and what I've been tweeting about, via Marcus Hartman:

Tyler Moeller called Florida players classless. "I've never been called so many racial slurs in my life."

Here's full Moeller quote after I got chance to listen again: "I’ve never seen more people swing at our players & call us racial slurs..."

"I’ve never been called a cracker more in my life than I have today." Moeller on Florida in Gator Bowl

Hartman also added that Moeller "seemed to feel like it needed to be said" and that his quote was an answer to a question about chippiness, but here's the deal: If players are using words tinged with racial animus to get under others' skin, even on a football field where seemingly all is fair if a referee doesn't see you, that bugs me. If Florida players are doing that, it bugs me and it's in my jurisdiction, such as it may be.

I don't want people who represent the university that I attend and love to represent it in a manner that other people can call "classless," in general (I know you remember Hannah Rogers' blackface episode), and I don't like the idea that seemingly mutual chippiness is going to get turned into a referendum on whether the Gators are classy. But mostly, I'm embarrassed that this was dismissed by so many so quickly, and frustrated that I didn't express my qualms about both Florida players' alleged slurs and Moeller's response to them articulately enough to have a healthy discussion about them.

And I hate that this is what I'm talking and writing about, hours after a big win. But some things are more important than sports, and I'm not embarrassed to be upholding that idea.

Off Topic: Georgia fans are back on the “Fire Richt” Train. Lol’s

On Topic: WE WIN!!

Being a Brantley defender….This makes me very happy that he was able to go out like this.

So he’s here. I’m not particularly sad to see him go, but I’m happy he left with the glow of victory on him.

And that is what I gave him at halftime..a B. I would still keep it right around there. Not great, not horrible…just..yeah…pretty good.

The offense as a whole was generally a few steps removed from the worst of the worst this season, and a lot of people on Twitter, when asked to grade Brian White’s performance as offensive coordinator, gave him something around a B

The only thing I don’t agree with is where you chose to talk about the Offensive Line. I must have missed something because they still suck.

Also on that list: Debose. No one on the current roster matches the game-breaking potential he has, and he’s a weapon on special teams to rival Brandon James. He deserves the Gator Bowl MVP award he got

Yes he did.

Way to go Andre.

Andy, I have to ask...did you ever play football?
No.

I played soccer. The worst thing that happened to me was getting my foot stomped by a jackass while I played keeper without gloves. I was dumb back then.

Wait, what? I’m confused.

A linebacker, got upset because someone called him a Cracker? On a football field!?! Is that what this is about? What a delicate little flower he is.

Poor Linebacker is

Sad because he’s not gonna get to play any more games.

That’s gotta be it. I mean, it has to be.

I'm more surprised he views "cracker" as a derogatory racial slur

It is definitely not a positive term, but it’s far from a slur, especially when the group being insulted has never had a history of the term being used as a way of disparaging their humanity. Not to apologize for anything Florida’s players said (and it does not speak well of our on-field sportsmanship), but I’m just not getting it.

We just live in an over-sensitive society. I mean heck, I’ve been around and played sports my entire life. I’ve done everything from curling and chess-boxing, to sailing and wrestling. I’ve been called everything under the sun: Whitey, Honky, Cracker, White-Boy, Sunscreen, and a few more that aren’t fit to print, but I’ve never given a damn. Ever. It’s all just part of what goes on in the world of sports.

If he’s offended by what they say in college, does he really think he can mentally (and apparently, emotionally) handle the NFL, Arena League, CFL, All American Football League or whatever? He’ll be crying before the coin toss.

It's good that you weren't offended. That reflects positively on you.

It’s not good that you were called those names. That reflects poorly on them. Yes, I think “cracker” is a derogatory term. It has been used to malign marginalize (primarily) white, southern Americans for generations.

I wouldn't take it too serious.

From everything i’ve read most ohio state fans are more pissed at the guy who said he got called a cracker because it just sounds like sour grapes. Also you want to tell me that it was just Florida players out there trash talking? I don’t buy that.

Exactly. It’s football. All they do is talk trash. On both sides.

BYE JOHN BRANTLEY

GLAD YOU WON, NOW LEAVE FOREVER, PLEASE.

Please explain the racism thing. I find it highly embarrassing and offensive if our players were using racial slurs against the other team. And if true and the media shrugs it off because it was blacks calling whites names then I’m also disgusted with that, but not surprised.

It’s a two-way street, but only one-way gets talked about. Unless of course, you’re the University of Michigan Law School. But, I mean, then again, I don’t really think Honky, Whitey, or whatever are racial slurs. Mostly because I’ve just never really cared about any of that stuff. I’m Italian, I’ve got friends that call me WOP, Guinea … I just don’t care. Mostly WOP though, and it’s usually just amongst us and not really in public or whatever.

One of the major reasons that I just don’t care about it, is because everything turns into race and what not. It’s tiresome and boring. If people suck it up a bit, and not bring it up everytime people get together, eventually, nobody would do it anymore or even notice it.

Kind of like Queen Mab (think King Arthur, not Shakespeare) due to the spread of Christianity.

But what happened?

I don’t know. Hopefully, Andy elaborates more.

I will, but it needs to be a separate post.

And I may wait until Wednesday or so.

So with Brantley gone who do yall think will be our starter this next season?

I don’t get to keep up with the team as much as I would like to but like earlier this year when Brantley got hurt Brisset was starting over Driskel and I did’t get why. Now I just recently joined sb nation and I already realize yall know alot more about the Gators and probebly football itself than I do but Driskel had to be the #1 QB in high school in the nation for a reason right? P.S. I am a 4th generation Cracker and proud of it lol.

Brissett is 1A right now.

Driskel is 1B.

It happened this fall when Brissett caught up to Driskel around LSU/when Driskel got hurt, and Driskel being worse than Brissett (yup, said it) against Auburn sealed the deal.

There’s a spring practice season that will be an open competition, and Driskel’s got the tools to play QB. But I think Brissett leads by a nose.

Driskel being worse than Brissett (yup, said it) against Auburn sealed the deal.

You’re probably right in that Brissett leads by a nose, but Charlie is gone now, so that just complicates things even more. However, there is no way, that Brissett was better than Driskel in the Auburn game.

I even did two Theater posts about Brissett and Driskel. It was clear that if anything, Driskel played better, but one could argue that they preformed the same. But no, Brissett was not better.

They were equally terrible and unprepared for that Auburn game

The real indicator will be how each present themselves to whomever will be the new offensive coordinator. I personally prefer Brissett’s skill set in a pro-style offense, but it’s not like Driskel couldn’t easily improve past him before next fall.

He didn't that I could tell

Brissett was Charlie’s chosen one though. I am very curious what the result will be when an offensive coordinator who wasn’t responsible for recruiting either of them starts working with them.

I disagreed with those posts then.

Still disagree now.

I thought Driskel looked lost

but Brissett made more bad plays. It was kind of a which is worse scenario, the guy who looks totally incompetent, or the guy who has the crap game.

You should have made one to the contrary then…

I see

I figured there was alot more to it than I knew. I sure hope they can get things turned around. I appriciate the info guys.

Child please.

I don’t really think a white racial slur really exists. In comparison to the slurs for “minorities” that are out there, being called a cracker and being offended by it is ridiculous. Grow a pair and get the hell over it. And I just gotta say it, I’m sorry if I sound like an asshole homer here but I got to, Sambino was head hunting the whole game. Watch the replay of his hit on Rainey and try to say he wasn’t trying to hurt him. Obvious helmet to helmet and lead up high with the fore arms and obviously flung them out to try to hit him up high. And that’s not dirty? He did it all game. Ok that’s my rant. Best game of the season offensively since the Kentucky game which isn’t saying much but it was good to see. And defensively Sharrif Floyd is un-freaking-blockable. He had an awesome day. Our whole offense did. They made Braxton Miller look like Troy Smith all over again I loved it. Go Gators orange and blue til I die.

Our whole defense did**** oops.

WORST. TYPO. EVER.

Geez.

I know I’m so ashamed. Damn I should’ve went to college….

You should have "gone" to college. But hey, it's a message board.
Yet another example.

I blame my highschool.

I don’t really think a white racial slur really exists. In comparison to the slurs for "minorities" that are out there, being called a cracker and being offended by it is ridiculous.

So cracker is the new slur?

If I rolled my eyes any more at that they’d do a 360 in my head.
