From today's New York Times, the NCAA is investigating the use of Tennessee's hostesses to lure recruits to Knoxville;
A significant part of the investigation is focused on the use of recruiting hostesses who have become folk heroes on Tennessee Internet message boards for their ability to help lure top recruits. N.C.A.A. officials have visited four prospects and are scheduled to visit two others this week in an investigation covering at least three states. The inquiry is unusual in its scope and its timing. It is rare that the N.C.A.A. looks at this wide a swath of one university's recruits before the players have signed with a program in February.
Of course, an investigation could be nothing. But where there is smoke, there is fire and Lane Kiffin has been striking matches his entire first year at UT. That the hostesses are involved surely has made everyone's ears perk up. It seems that they have been doing more than just showing the recruits around Neyland Stadium.
In one case, hostesses traveled nearly 200 miles to attend a high school game in South Carolina in which at least three Tennessee recruits were playing...The hostesses are considered representatives of the university, which would mean they could not recruit players off campus. Therefore, the visits may be considered violations of N.C.A.A. recruiting rules.
The article mentions other hostesses contacting recruits and mentions how Bryce Brown has a picture with a hostess on his facebook or Myspace page, implying that it was taken while he was a recruit. That is not a violation, but the article then states that hostesses have contacted recruits through social networking sites, which is a violation if the hostess is seen as a representative of the school.
Right now, it's all relatively tame, but it could explode into something more. If Kiffin is using the hostesses as a way to get to recruits outside the NCAA rules, it could be serious trouble for the Vols.

Makes one wonder if
these ladies were recruiting in the bedroom. Courtesy of Johnny Be Good (80’s movie about a big time HS QB recruit) and that Spike Lee movie with the basketball player named Jesus. I am just glad that Lame is at the other end of this. It just never ends with this guy. One has to wonder if he actually read the recruiting rules book and actually to the test himself or sent someone to take it for him.

"He Got Game" was the movie
And I think Kiffin’s just bringing the USC recruiting handbook with him, to be honest.

"to the test himself"= took the test himself

everything about this boy (LK) wreaks of "severely lacking morality"
what??? negative recruiting and snide remarks with hidden messages each time this boy gets in front of a microphone isn’t enough? now he has to go and prostitute his schools coeds??? if this is true, shame on him, his staff, his AD and university president, and shame on the parents of these young ladies for allowing it to go on. if UT is such a wonderful school, and he is such a great coach. wouldn’t you think that these recruits would be lined up to get in there? just like nukeese r. who LK taught to be a liar from the start. he is doing the same type of stuff with everyone he is involved with. why is his “highest paid coaching staff” jumping ship? they know what the rest of us know, that ship is sinking faster than than the titanic. lil’lane; the gift that keeps on giving. keep it up jr!!!

Guys an idiot.

UT has been doing this since way before Kiffin
It’s not like it’s a new program that he brought in. I have a friend that was a UT hostess several years ago. Let’s just say that she wouldn’t have convinced me to play for the Vols.
When I was in school, UF had the same thing. They were called “Gator Getters.” I can’t remember exactly when they got rid of the program though. It was sometime during the Spurrier era. Anyone else know?

The Gator Getters follow-up
From a Gator Country forum. There is also a link to an archived SI article from the 80s that details the program……very interesting read

Occasionally you will see them walking around campus. I know a few of them would sit behind press row for basketball games, but they might have moved by now. Also, every school has hostesses, but they are not acting like arms of the football coaching staff and going to high school games and texting recruits. I’m sure any school could have been caught doing this, but Tennessee is getting more attention after all the previous secondary violations.

al davis is looking a lot smarter as time goes on

Yea, theres nothing in the rules saying you cant have these freindly females to show young men around.
Going on official visits to the kids HS is a different story. I dont know if you can blame Americas Jester Lane Kiffin for this, but I wouldnt put it past him. Considering he will do anything to get the top recruits.

How do you know they are hostesses when walking around campus?
I thought I remember that they used to wear some kind of special hat or something like the Rho Chis…..just can’t recall exactly.

I guess the Vols really had some "Volunteers"
TheTealDeal - December 9, 2009
This program has been in place long before Kiffin got to Tennessee
it started back in the 60s. And yes, Florida has them too… the NCAA could easily investigate any big program because they all have them, instead they have an axe to grind w/ Kiffin. But this is minor even if the NCAA does find wrong doing. It’s pretty stupid
golfballs03 - December 10, 2009
As pointed out
it’s not about having hostesses, it’s about what they are doing. Going to H.S. games, contact online etc are all against the rules.
Giant Catfish - December 10, 2009
it's against the rules if they are acting as official representatives of the university
but it’s not clear if the NCAA can regulate what undergrad students can do on their free time.
